There are two main sectors in the printing industry: general printing<\/strong> (sheet printing) and rotary printing<\/strong>. The purpose\u00a0of a general printing<\/strong> facility is to produce and sell books, calendars, diaries, flyers and other printed materials to be pasted.\u00a0The purpose\u00a0of a rotary\u00a0printing<\/strong> facility is to produce and sell newspapers, mail order catalogues, leaflets.<\/p>\n

Prepress<\/h2>\n

From a customer’s PDF file, the prepress department designs the grid and the\u00a0imposition scheme<\/strong> of the publication\u00a0to be carried out. After talking with the customer\u00a0 (web-to-print<\/strong>\u00a0or plotter) and obtaining the “ready for press<\/strong>“, the production of plates is launched (CTP).<\/p>\n

General Printing.<\/h2>\n

Producing publications<\/strong> is at the heart of the general printing<\/strong>: books, magazines, handbooks, documentations. A publication is made of a cover and a series of sections. Sections may have 8, 16, 32, 64, and more rarely 128 pages. There is a large variety of printing processes:\u00a0four-color<\/strong> printing,\u00a0pantone<\/strong> (PMS) or customer hue. Various varnishes may be used: acrylic varnish, UV varnish, edible varnish, etc.<\/p>\n

After printing<\/strong>, several steps lead to the final completion of the publication: forwarding<\/strong> (folding sections, trimming, sewing or gluing) and finishing<\/strong> (hand works, insetting,\u00a0installing accessories).<\/p>\n

Rotary printing.<\/h2>\n

Rotary printing<\/strong> is better suited to large volumes that require a fast production. Thus, it is often privileged for printing newspapers,\u00a0mail order catalogues or leaflets. Unlike the general printing which uses paper sheets, a rotary press uses reels.<\/p>\n

There are several kinds of outputs for a rotary press.<\/p>\n
